My name is Ian.  I play the viola in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (a viola is similar to a violin but slightly bigger and deeper).   I have a Diploma in Performance from the Canberra School of Music.  I've been accepted by the University of Canterbury, to do an Honours course in Viola Performance in 2002.

I enjoy teaching, and have quite a lot of experience teaching both adults and children.  In Sydney, where I come from, I taught about thirty pupils in two schools, one a primary school, the other a selective secondary school.  Some of the things that have been written about me...

"A reliable, hard worker who is friendly, patient, of excellent character and always willing to help out. I believe Ian would be an asset to any school ... which requires a patient, dedicated and caring person."
D. Casey, St George Girls' High School, Sydney, NSW.

"...a beautiful, gifted musician, and plays with great soul and feeling."
Father Kevin Bates sm Th. M, Sydney, NSW.

I may be able to teach at your home, depending on where you live.  (I myself live in Waltham.)  As you can see, my prices are competitive: I charge only $15.00 for a half hour, and the first lesson is free.  It's my practice to record lessons on to cassette, so that the pupil can listen to their lesson and remind themselves of what we did.

As well as music, I do drawings of buildings (private houses, cafes, pubs, shops etc).  I've had 12 commissions in the last year, to draw varoius buildings in Christchurch.  Some of my recent commissions were the 'Mascot Finance' building in Cambridge Terrace; Robbie's Bar and Bistro in Lancaster; and Cleary's Hairdressing Salon in Woolston.  My drawings are done in pen and ink and are A3 size (suitable to frame); they also reduce well for use on letterheads, publicity, Christmas cards and so on.
